Christmas Day, So Cal Style

img_1260

This post is a little late. On Christmas Day, we decided to take the boat out for a harbor cruise in San Diego. Though it was chilly in the morning, the day turned out to be beautiful and sunny.

Not a bad life for these marine critters, eh?

I wish I had a video of these “locals” sunning their bods like one big happy family. There are quite a few sea lions, which attracts sharks and Orcas. I was hoping to get some pictures of a pod of Orcas, but no luck. Maybe next time.

Got fish, Mister?

Jonathan Livingston?

I was trying out my new Tamron 70-200mm lens on moving objects. I’m very pleased at how sharp my bird-in-flight pictures turned out. Seagulls and pelicans are about as wild as our wildlife gets around here.

Kona was with us, though I failed to get any good pictures of him. When we were pulling up to the boat slip, he decided to jump into the water. I panicked and was fully prepared to jump in after him, but luckily was able to grab onto his collar and pull him up onto the swim step. I wish I could have snapped a picture of him all wet, but was too focused on getting my silly pup dried off and keeping him safe.

This guy hung on the entire trip!

Building on a Dream

Today we visited the Mister while he worked on his boat. This old tank is his dream come true – at least it will be in about a year.

DSC_0003

It’s an old 1971 Owens-Brigatine, which had a reputation as being a supreme Marlin catching machine back in the day. Mister has always dreamed of having one, and a few months ago he came across this one and bought it for a song and a dance.

When dad’s happy, I’m happy!

This boat needs a lot of work, but the infrastructure is solid, and Mister knows boats and has made some connections to other people who have also restored boats like this.

We’re all excited about this project and taking trips to Catalina. It’s a good sized vessel at 33 feet, so it will hold steady in bumpy water. Best of all, Mister will be able to bring home lots of bluefin and yellow tail tuna, which we all love.

The Mister’s favorite fish to catch and release are the big fighters, like Marlin and Swordfish. The ocean temperature has been warmer than usual the past couple of years, which has made for great fishing in Southern California. There have been record numbers of Marlin out here, and even some Swordfish.

We’ve decided to change the name of the boat, but haven’t come up with one that we all like. Our friend suggested “Brig it On” because it is a Brigatine. We’ve also been contemplating a Hawaiian-themed name. Were still throwing out ideas, though. Feel free to toss any suggestions this way, friends! Who knows, maybe one will stick.

8 Photos of Happiness Challenge…

…Better late than never? Back in August, our friend, Lexi the Schnauzer, graciously nominated Kona and I to participate in the 8 Photos of Happiness Challenge created by Ariel’s Little Corner of the Internet.

Apologies for the tardiness of this reply – I picked out these photos back in August and they’ve been sitting on my computer desktop waiting to be posted! So here goes…

This is my absolute favorite picture of Kona. He loves being chased, as you can see from the smile on his face.

Captain Kona loves sailing on daddy’s boat.

konamotorhome

Sitting on mommy’s lap as we take off in the motor home to go camping. Though I loves camping, riding in the motor home makes me a bit nervous, so I just sit all 50 pounds onto mom’s lap for most of the trip.

konadaddyjamala

Watching the sunset with daddy while camping at Jamala Beach.

walkiewalkie

“Time for our walky-walky, mommy!” This is the look I give my mom every morning at 7:30. I keep track of time better than she does!

konagrandcanyon

Camping hiking at the Grand Canyon. Daddy has a habit of pointing at things in pictures.

konasnow

Finally a picture with mommy! I loves jumping and biting at the snow. It seems to bring out the Husky instincts in me.

It’s now time for me to nominate the following blogs/friends:

Pupeye the Sailor Dog

Pupeye The Sailor Pup

Ahoy Matey!

The days are warming up here in Southern California, and that means putting on Kona’s sailor hat and cruising around the harbor in our boat. It’s a little scary for Kona at first, but he’s getting used to it. His favorite part is going for a swim.
